Interview with Amy Zell, manager at The SPOT

Could you tell me about The SPOT?
We have eight lanes for bowling. We have six in-theater dining movie theaters with first-run movies, things like Star Wars comes out this Thursday, we’ll be showing that. Then we have a giant special event room, where we have a big projector where we can show football games on Sundays, or occasionally, we do free movies like old school movies. We have a nice bar that has 46 different types of beer on tap. Throughout the whole bar, bowling, cocktail, and special event area, you can also eat. We have quite a few old school arcade games like Pac-Man. What else do we have? We have Frogger, Donkey Kong, all sorts of fun old school, along with pool tables and shuffle board.

Why did you guys decide to open in the San Marcos area now?
Our owner (Mitchell Roberts) is born and raised in San Marcos, so I think that had a lot to do with the area that he picked. We have another location in Kyle called EVO. He just, I think, being from here, wanted to open in this area.

What do you hope people that come here take away from the experience?
I hope that they come and see a place that they come with their friends one night and then come with maybe their parents if their parents are in town, visiting them when they’re at school or whatever the case might be. A place that they have different options depending on who they’re hanging out with, but a local, fun neighborhood place to hang out with, not just a bar. That there’s other options besides just going to a bar. What it’s like to have here.

What has the response been so far to see you guys being here and open up?
Everybody loves it. I’m new to the area, but from what I understand, people have been talking about the SPOT for awhile. They’re really excited that we’re finally open and that there’s more than they even envisioned there to be. A lot more fun to be had here than what they thought initially.

Do you know what’s next for The SPOT?
We have a lot of events coming like we’re showing this week on different days, all different Star Wars movies, leading up to Star Wars coming out on Thursday.

Then right now, we have a lot of holiday parties. People are coming in with their companies and whatnot. We have all sorts of events that we’re thinking about and trying to make happen. We just don’t have anything major. We have Thursday with Stars Wars coming out, we have a big music event. We’ll have four or five different DJs and bands that’ll come in and play all night. Other than that, I mean that’s really what we got to focus for the rest of the year, just some holiday events and other fun … Now we’re showing chick flicks every Wednesday except for this Wednesday. Last Wednesday, we showed “Friends with Benefits.” It was in our special events room. It’s free, and we’ll advertise cosmos and margaritas for those days as well. And wine. Sorry. Wine Down Wednesday, so it’s wine.

Do you have any comments about the growth of San Marcos? Every year, the university and San Marcos itself has seen a population growth. How do you think that will affect your business?
I think as the town gets bigger, it’s just can only help us. We are a good spot for college kids. We have seen a lot of them. They’ve been a great customer for us or guest, I should say. As the school gets bigger and sees more students and whatnot, I don’t think that’s not going to hurt us. I think that’s just going to help us.
