Interview with Blake Perini, Candy Sweets and Treats employee

Can you tell me about this place?
Candy Sweets and Treats, it opened about a little over a year and a half ago. We have all kinds of stuff, we have foreign candies and basically anything that you can think of, a lot of vintage stuff from your childhood. It’s obviously not vintage as in it’s 50-year-old candy, but it’s like brands from the 50’s and things like that and weird eclectic stuff. It’s a good little spot downtown.

Why did you guys open up in San Marcos?
Leanne (Latham, owner) really wanted to open this store. This was a passion for her and she just really wanted to open this shop. It’s a nice project that she has for sure.

What do you hope people who come here take away?
It’s funny, for a lot of people it’s just foot traffic or they didn’t maybe know the place was here. It is really fun when people just walk through and they say, “oh wow, I haven’t had this since I was a kid,” or “I haven’t seen this in years,” and it’s definitely nice when people come in just to like hill time and end up buying a ton of candy because they just got so excited. That is really satisfying when someone is genuinely excited to find something that they like, that’s the best part I think.

How many people work here?
Leanne is the owner and then including me, it’s about 5 or 6 people that work here.

What’s next for this place?
I don’t know that we have any real grand designs, but we definitely keep getting more stuff and this place keeps on growing. We just plan on just doing the same thing and always having real interesting stuff. We have our seasonal stuff. But ya, always just having a good selecting and just getting more and weirder stuff for sure.
